A special recreation permit is required for day use by all river users in the congressionally designated Snake Wild and Scenic River Corridor. It consists of the National Forest lands within 1/4 mile of the river on both sides, from the Hoback Junction to one mile above the Alpine Junction Bridge. A seasonal permit is good from May 1- November 1 for the year it was purchased. Day passes are also available onsite, but make sure to download the Recreation.gov app prior to arrival, so you can scan a QR code and pay onsite. Permits are not required to camp in developed campgrounds in the Snake River Canyon.
Boat ramps in the Snake River Canyon include:
- Astoria Boat Ramp
- Pritchard Boat Ramp
- Elbow Boat Ramp
- East Table Boat Ramp
- West Table Boat Ramp
- Sheep Gulch Boat Ramp
There is also an overlook and trail down to the river at the Big Kahuna/Lunch Counter Overlook.
Boat Ramps have parking, vault toilets and river access to launch non-motorized watercraft.
Safety:
Check the water levels before you go. The river can be very different depending on how high or low the water is, creating new challenges every day. Get current river flows and make sure your skills and experience are ready for what the river has to offer for the day. Even if you have floated this portion of the Snake many times, the water levels and conditions may differ.
Aquatic Invasive Species:
To prevent the spread of Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS), you must clean, inspect, and dry your boats and equipment prior to visiting the Snake River. For information go to the Wyoming Game & Fish website (a state AIS boat decal is required by the state of Wyoming). These decals can be purchased online or in local retailers. See the Wyoming Game and Fish website for more information.
